Nathalie Mielcarek, Ph.D.
Scientist-Molecular Immunology
|
|
Dr. Nathalie Mielcarek received her Ph.D. in 1996 from University of Sciences and Technologies, Lille, France under the mentorship of Prof. A. Capron. The goal of her thesis was to express a Schistosoma mansoni antigen by the respiratory pathogen Bordetella pertussis and to evaluate the protective efficacy of this recombinant bacteria in a mouse model. During her postdoctoral training in Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Goteborg, Sweden, headed by Prof. J. Holmgren, she participated, under the supervision of Dr. C. Czerkinsky, in the development of anti-inflammatory therapeutic vaccines against S. mansoni using Sm28GST and parasite egg antigens chemically conjugated to the B subunit of cholera toxin. She then joined the laboratory of Molecular Mechanisms of Microbial Pathogenesis (Inserm U629), Pasteur Institute of Lille, France headed by Dr. C. Locht, where her main focus was to develop a highly attenuated B. pertussis as an alternative to the currently available vaccines against whooping-cough. She obtained a permanent position as research scientist at INSERM (National Institute for Health and Medical Research) in France. She is now detached at IVI and started to work at the Laboratory Science Division as Scientist-Molecular Immunology focusing on neonatal vaccinology.

Huan Huu Nguyen, Ph.D.
Scientist-Molecular Immunology
|
|
Dr. Huan H. Nguyen graduated (M.S. in Biology) from the Faculty of Natural Sciences, the Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. In 1992 he received his Ph.D. in immunology from the Institute of Microbiology, the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague. For his postdoctoral studies he joined the laboratory of Dr. Jiri Mestecky, Department of Microbiology at University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA in 1994 and has been appointed as a Research Assistant Professor of Microbiology since 2000. His research has focused on the effector mechanisms of heterosubtypic immunity (HSI) to influenza A virus infections. His studies published in Virology, Journal of Virology, and Journal of Infectious Diseases suggest novel approaches for the development of preventive and therapeutic vaccines to protect against infections with different subtypes of influenza viruses. He joined as Scientist-Molecular Immunology, Lab. Science Div as of Sep. 18, 2006.

Giulietta Saletti
Clinical Laboratory Scientist
|
|
Giulietta Saletti received her master degree from the University of Siena, Italy, and joined the IVI Lab Sciences Division. Giulietta has gained more than 10 years of research experience at Novartis Vaccines (formerly Chiron Vaccines). The work dealt with analyses of immune responses to HCV in pre-clinical models (mouse and chimpanzee) and in phase 1 human clinical trials of hepatitis C virus (HCV) candidate vaccines. Furthermore, she studied the role of the HCV receptor CD81 in human B lymphocyte activation and its relevance to HCV-associated B lymphocyte disorders.
Giulietta also contributed to the development of a candidate vaccine against the SARS virus and to the evaluation of various adjuvants for enhancing immune response to influenza virus vaccines.

Rodney Carbis, B.Sc.
Senior Scientist
|
|
Rodney
Carbis worked for CSL, an Australian vaccine and
blood products manufacturer, for 16 years. For the last
four years at CSL, he was head of Influenza Vaccine research
and development. This position involved developing and
implementing improvements to the vaccine manufacturing
process, as well as validation of new methodology discussions
and submission of documentation to the National Regulatory
Authority (TGA). Due to the changing nature of the Influenza
virus the responsibilities also required the preparation
of new seed lots and reference reagents for quality control
and lot release testing.
As well as working with Influenza, Rodney spent time
in the virus testing section Quality Control. This involved
testing human and veterinary viral vaccines and serum
products for potency both in vitro and in vivo. After
CSL Rodney worked for Sartorius Australia (a filtration
and fermentor manufacturer) as technical manager where
he worked with vaccine and pharmaceutical companies
in Australia and Asia helping to develop downstream
processes and optimizing sterilizing filtration.
Rodney joined IVI in June 2003 as senior scientist
in charge of process development. Since joining IVI
he has been involved in vaccine technology transfer,
and has worked closely with Cholera and Typhoid vaccine
manufacturers in the Asia Pacific region. He is also
leading a team to develop a Shigella vaccine at IVI.
