The International Vaccine Institute hosts a training course consisting of both lectures and hands-on activities covering topics related to BSL-3/ABSL-3 laboratories.

About the course
This course, conducted by internationally certified biosafety instructors, is designed to provide comprehensive knowledge and training on safe work practices to laboratory scientists and personnel desiring to work under BSL-3 containment. Understanding applied biosafety and high containment design is the foundation upon which this course builds to give practical insights and skills needed to work safely and securely and efficiently operate and maintain a BSL-3/ABSL-3 facility. Team participation involving all facility working groups, class exercises and practical hands-on experiences enable the attendees to build skill sets and develop networking opportunities that will be invaluable to themselves and their organization. The course will be conducted in English and therefore applicants should be able to communicate in English. At the end of the course each participant will be awarded a certificate of attendance.

Course content
The course will cover the following topics:
  • BSL-3 and ABSL-3 Practices and Principles - an Overview
  • Understanding, Assessing and Mitigating Risk
  • BSL-3 Biocontainment Engineering Principles
  • Decontamination and Sterilization Principles and Practices
  • Selection, Use, and Donning/Doffing of PPE
  • Packaging of Material for Transport between Labs and to other Facilities
  • Proper use of Class II BSCs
  • Discussion and Demonstration of Spill Clean-Up
  • Emergency Response Plan and Team Development
  • Prevention of Laboratory Acquired Accidents and Recognizing Signs & Symptoms
  • Commissioning of High Containment Laboratories and Preparing for Annual Certification

Registration
The course application form is attached to this e-mail. Fully completed application forms should be submitted to either to Dr. Konrad Stadler (kstadler@ivi.int) or Ms. Hyun Song Lee (hslee@ivi.int) by email by August 22, 2008. The course is restricted to a limited number of participants!

Costs and expenses
Course fee: KRW 1,100,000.- which includes learning materials, tea/coffee, and lunch. Participants will be required to pay the course fees before Aug. 27, 2008. Payment should be made by wire transfer to the bank account below.

Participants will need to pay for their accommodation, dinner and travel to and from the course. The organizer will be able to assist participants with accommodation arrangements upon request (no later than September 5). Therefore, participants should indicate on their application whether they will need accommodation arrangements.
