IVI UPDATE
 
- CHOVI launched to speed up use of modern cholera vaccines world-wide
 $22 million Gates grant awarded to IVI to build on DOMI achievements
 

IVI's efforts to control cholera have gained momentum with the launch of the Cholera Vaccine Initiative (CHOVI) in late 2006. This new Initiative hopes to accelerate the introduction of safe and effective modern cholera vaccines to populations in cholera-endemic regions, as well as to prevent cholera epidemics during natural or man-made emergencies.

While the development and widespread use of oral rehydration therapy (ORT) has greatly reduced cholera deaths in the past 30 years, the disease continues to be a scourge in many developing countries, killing an estimated 120,000 people world-wide each year...


 
 - IVI scientists develop new laboratory animal model to evaluate vaccine candidates   against bacterial dysentery
  IVI scientists have developed a new laboratory animal model for shigellosis with guinea pigs in a   study that could speed up the development of a vaccine against Shigella dysentery, a major   cause of diarrheal deaths amongst children in developing countries.
 

 - CNN airs IVI's public service announcements

  CNN International and its sister network CNN Airport begin airing public service announcements   on the work of the IVI and its humanitarian mission in March. Because of IVI's mission and its   non-profit status, CNN is donating these announcements free of charge.

 - IVI D-G honored by Guangxi Province, China
    IVI Director-General, Dr. John Clemens, has been honored by the Guangxi Provincial   Government for his contribution to the Chinese province as a foreign scientist.

- IVI Charity Concert draws 25,000 people in Osaka, Japan
 
 A major charity concert in support of the IVI and its mission drew more than 25,000 Japanese in  Osaka on January 23, 2007. ‘The IVI Charity Concert 2007,’ held in the Osaka Dome, was the  first international fund-raising event for the Institute held outside of Korea. .
