IVI provides a variety of training and technical assistance activities, including intensive courses on vaccinology and clinical evaluation of vaccines for health professionals; training in field research methods, as part of our field research activities in developing countries; and training and technical assistance to vaccine producers and national regulatory authorities in developing countries, as part of its efforts to assist in the transfer of production technology of selected vaccines. Visit the Technical Assistance and Technology Transfer page for more information on our lab science training activities. Below is a description of IVI's major training activities.

Annual IVI Vaccinology Course:
Since May 2000 IVI has conducted an intensive, week-long training course on vaccines and immunization each year for professionals in developing countries. The purpose of the annual course is to build country capacity in vaccine science and epidemiology by providing participants with a comprehensive overview of the vaccine continuum, from vaccine development, evaluation, and regulatory principles, to production, introduction, and policy issues. The course focuses on the needs of scientists, public health officials and decision makers involved in vaccine development and immunization policy. Vaccine experts from international organizations, academia and industry, as well as IVI scientists, take part as course facilitators. IVI awards a certain number of scholarships for developing country participants each year. Course sponsors have included: AusAID, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development, Republic of Korea; the Rockefeller Foundation; GlaxoSmithKline (GSK); Sartorius and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). Clinical Trial Training Course for Members of the Developing Country Vaccine Manufacturers Network (DCVMN):
This workshop aims to improve the ability of clinical and regulatory staff of vaccine producers in developing countries in developing protocols for combination vaccines, evaluating clinical trial results, and conducting post-marketing surveillance. The theoretical and practical instruction and case studies are designed to facilitate WHO-prequalification of vaccines produced by the participants' companies. The course has been supported with funds from the United States Agency for International Development(USAID).

Advanced epidemiology and vaccinology course for graduate students at School of Public Health, Seoul National University:
This course, offered each year, bridges the disciplines of epidemiology, laboratory sciences, and public health and policy in order to provide training for students who wish to pursue a multi-disciplinary, practical approach to the control of infectious diseases and immunization programs. Students from diverse backgrounds, including medical and pharmacy graduates, nurses, public health specialists and scientists from the public and private sectors attend this post-graduate course.

Scholars in Residence program:
IVI began this program in 2006, with funding from Merck & Co. Inc. The program brings recognized scientists to IVI for one week to provide mentoring to IVI scientists, develop partnerships between IVI and their home institutions, and deliver lectures and presentations. The program is designed to facilitate interaction and future collaboration between IVI and the world's outstanding centers of vaccinology.

Field research training for local researchers in developing countries:
As part of IVI's field research activities, provided through the Diseases of the Most Impoverished (DOMI) program and other projects, it has conducted a variety of workshops and trainings on methods of field epidemiology, computerized data management, Good Clinical Practices (CGP), economic research and social behavioral research for local researchers, in collaboration with our local partner organizations. These courses are held in countries where IVI is working such as India, China, Vietnam, Pakistan and Indonesia.

Faculty members and participants hold a heated debate during a roundtable discussion session at the Sixth International Advanced Course on Vaccinology in the Asia-Pacific Region held at the IVI headquarters in May 2006.

Post Doctoral training:
The IVI also has a post-doctoral training program in vaccine sciences in which young researchers from developing countries have been placed in laboratories engaged in vaccine development (in France, Sweden, Korea and the U.S.). In the future, IVI hopes to have post doctoral students placed in translational research settings. This program is funded by SIDA.
